This paper aims to clarify the economic effect of the Japanese faith in Shintoism. In spite that Shintoism is a primitive religion with an animistic color, Japanese people have been keeping their belief in Shintoism together with Confucianism, Buddhism and Christianity even after these world-wide religions were introduced into Japan. An interesting question is whether there is any relationship between the belief in Shintoism and Japanese economic development, and if any, what it is. Paper introduced the analysis of Kunio Yanagida on the change of people's belief in Shintoism from the venerat10n of ancestors to the Kami with good fortune or specific power of industry, and also from the genuine worship of Kami (ancestor) to the prayer with request. In the section 2, author tries to identify the Kami of merchants and artisans of the Edo period and to show the reason why those Kami came to be worshipped by merchants and artisans. Examples are Sukunahiko No Mikoto worshipped by pharmaceutical merchants, Shotoku Taishi by carpenters, Kakinomoto No Hitomaro by paper-making artisans in Iwami area, Inari by metal artisans, and the Sumiyoshi Shrine by Osaka merchants, etc. Merchants and artisans worshipped those kami not only in their shops or works, but also went to the shrines of those gurdian Kami. It is also pointed out that Bushi (warriors) had their own family shrines in their own residence whose kami were mostly Inari. In the section 3, author shows the result of his own interview to the company managers and the Shinto priests in Kansai destrict. It is revealed that Japanese companies not only have their own shrines on the rooftop of the main building or in the factories keeping monthly and/ or annual festival, but also still continue to go to the same shrines of guardian Kami as that of their seniors more than one hundred years ago. They talked to the author that it is valuable for employees to confirm Safety First together in front of the company shrine monthly, for company managers to promise to do their best in front of guardian Kami every specific day of January, and for employees of the different companies of the same industry have a recreation tour together to the shrine of guardian Kami on a good day in spring or in autumn. Thus a tentative conclusion that author deduces from this paper is that Japanese people's belief in Shintoism has certainly had a positive effect on their economic development in their work, management and mutual cooperation. It is completely different from the Western combination of religion and economy. It is, however, surely a Japanese way.
