This paper aims to clarify the positive influence of Japanese Buddhism upon Japanese economic development since the seventeenth century. This argument might seem to be too adventurous, because it is quite rare for us to notice the influence of Buddhism upon the economic activities of Japanese firms or consumers today. However we attempt to provide the evidence of it in Japanese history. Section I describes the process by which Buddhism in Japan changed its character from the 1570s to the 1660s. Buddhist leaders, with the medieval authorities among their followers, fought fiercely against the army of Oda Nobunaga, a rising samurai and were completely defeated in the 1570s, after which Buddhist sects and temples were suppressed and then rehabilitated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Iyeyasu, both of whom were national rulers, under the strict control of the government. Under these circumstances Buddhist monks tried to persuade their followers that Buddhist doctrines were compatible with the social ethics of the Tokugawa government. We call this change in the characteristics of Buddhism the "Secularization" of Japanese Buddhism. Section II examines two Buddhist monks representative of secularization, one is Ren-nyo(1413-1499), the eighths Lord of the True Pure Land Sect and the other is Suzuki Shosan0579-1655), a Zen Buddhist monk who was from an immediate follower of Tokugawa Iyeyasu. It is found that both of them taught their followers that first either merchants, artisans, or peasants were able to come to Buddha if they worked hard in their everyday work, and secondly that Buddhist followers should not fight against other Buddhist sects nor Shintoists, should pay taxes or other duties correctly and observe the social rules of the government. Section III introduces three groups of merchants who were sincere Buddhists. The first is Sumitomo Masatomo and Soga Riemon, both are the founders of the Sumitomo Family; the second is Nakai Ryoyu and Matsui Yuken, both are representative of successful Ohmi Merchants; and the third is Itoh Chubei, the founder of Itochu Corp. and Marubeni Company. It is found that all of them paid high regard to Honesty and Fuse (Charity) from the spirit of Jihi (Mercy or Compassion) of Buddhism, and also they thought that they conducted themselves in the way of Bodhisattva of Buddhism i.e. benefitting others as well as themselves in their economic transactions.
