This study is to try to examine an aspect of Korean national movement and a feature of its political system through what we call “Donga-ilbo group" under Japanese rule in Korea. The reasons to argue about this group are as follows. First. this group had a strong relationship with old groups which played great roles in Daehan Imperial periods, 1897-1910. So, if we try to understand the continuity of Korean national movement in these two periods, it is useful to examine about this group. Second, Korean Democratic Party and other Korean opposition parties after 1945 stemmed from Donga-ilbo group. It is absolutely necessary to examine the group to study 'about Korean democratic movement where the opposition parties played great roles, and why their movement could not succeed until 1980' s in spite of their strong economic base and mass media' s support. Third, today, the member of Donga-ilbo group is accused as Japanese collaborators in spite of their great roles in national movement. To understand the Japanese collaborator problem, we need to study what the group was. On this essay, I argue as follows. The key to understand this group is the fact that they had some sense of economy which other groups lacked. In 1910' s, almost all other national parties or organizations were on the brink of bankruptcy because they were in the hands of traditional Yangban intellectuals who did not have this kind of economic sense. But Kim Seong-su, the leader and virtual owner of Donga-ilbo group, was a son of landowners newly emerged in this period, so lie had this sense of economy as his two fathers had. As the result of his participation, Korean national movement got new power of sound economy as the base up the movement. To insist the sound economy on the movement, Kim Seong-su needed and requested his absolute supremacy on his group. Because he did not trust traditional Yangban intellectuals, he replaced these old generation with new generation which he also belonged to. As the result, almost all member of Donga-ilbo group was occupied by the generation. This is Donga-ilbo group as a line of connections. After 1945, they found their way to the political world. It is the Korean Democratic Party or Han-gug Min-ju Dang. Donga-ilbo group had their great merit on their movement for their sound economy against other groups. But to understand why they, and only they could get it , we could not overlook from where they had got the economical resources. Of course, they had big estates, and well managed industries, but they are not all of the secrets of their sound economy. Important fact is that they had deep economical connection with the colonial government. They used Chosen Industrial Bank or Chosen Syokusan Ginko as their main bank, and sometimes did not hesitate to get subsidy from the colonial government. To understand why they could get this kind of deep connections, we should pay attention to the fact that they employed Pak Yeong-hyo as President of their companies. Pak Yeong-Hyo,Japanese Count and one of the greatest activists of civilization in 19th century, was a director of Chosen Industrial Bank in 1920' s and 30' s. They could get some advantages to get the connection and economical resources of the colonial government for this Count. In conclusion, we can say that Donga-ilbo group was a son of the Japanese rule. They are probably the group which played greatest roles on Korean national movement and their advantage against other groups was that they had their sound economy and connections with colonial government, for which they could insist their economy. But their sound economy was a economy, which only under Japanese rule their could insist. In 1945, they are one of the strongest political groups in South Korea. But after 1945, they could not find their economic base with which they could insist their sound economy on their movement, under new political and economic system. Now we can understand why they could not win politically after 1945 in spite of their strong outlook in 1945.
