This study will examine the birth process and the political behavior of the Korean Democratic Party (Hangug Minju Dang) under US occupation from 1945 to 1948. The reasons why it is necessary to examine this party are as follows. Today, this party is said to be the mother party of what is known as "Korean traditional opposition parties," that played a major role in the process of Korean democratization from 1948 to 1997. Despite this fact, there are not many insightful studies on the Korean Democratic Party itself. To under-stand "what was the Korean democratization process?" , we also need to examine "what the opposition party was." Second, to understand the continuity of Korean history before and after 1945, it is absolutely important to understand the true nature of the party. This is because the party is comprised of people who were in the Korean peninsula in the period of Japanese rule. Though the majority of the party was also the most influential group before 1945, and even in the period be-tween 1945 and 1948, they were defeated at that time and become the opposition. It is essential that one understands the reason behind this in order to grasp a better understanding of Korean politics after 1945. The key to understanding the party is their lack of legitimacy. Because they were in the Korean Peninsula und.er Japanese rule, it was necessary for them to establish a relationship with the Japanese government prior to 1945. Their relationship of this nature gave the Korean people the impression that "they might have been Japanese collaborators." Contrary to national movements in other Asian countries, in the Korean national movement, there were no "winners" in the movement. In such circumstance, all that the domestic group or "Kugnae-Pha" attained in the movement was the arousal of suspicion as Japanese collaborator, thereby relegating their position to the that of the opposition.
