I had an opportunity to learn the present situation on legal education of Asian laws through my study at the University of Melbourne from June to August 1997. There are 27 law faculties in Australia. The oldest one is situated in the University of Sydney founded in 1855, the next in the Unversity of Melbourne in 1857. Before the Second World War only 6 law faculties were established. But during 1990s 12 universities made law faculties. Because students go on increasing who wish to enter the University in parallel with increasing population. And economic and cultural interchange has been developed with many countries. This leads interests in law as a vital tool to economic and trade growth in Australia. In Australia undergraduate education in law consists of a minimum of a 3 year degree holding a prior university degree, or a 4 year degree for those without a prior degree. But many students studying law do a 5 or 6 year course and gain 2 combined degrees. Art/law, commerce or business/law, science/law, engineer/law and even medicine/law are becoming frequent. Most students enter undergraduate education at age 17 , 18 or 19. This means that even with a 5 or 6 year degree they graduate at around the same age as Japanese students. An understanding of Asian languages and cultures may be obtained by enrolling in a bachelor of arts degree with degrees in law. In Japan it is very difficult to introduce combined degrees system. Australia is rapidly developing both trading and diplomatic relations with many countries in Asia and the Pacific. This leads to interests in Asian laws. The University of Melbourne initiated to research and teach Asian laws. Dr. Hans Leyser began to work on lndonesian law some 40 years ago and Dr. Mary Hiscock organized to teach Japanese law, Korean law and Chinese law during 1970s and 1980s in the context of comparative and civil law. lt is 25 years since a Japanese law programme began at Monash University on the initiative of Dr. David Allan and Dr. Peter Hocker. Asian Law Centre at the University of Melbourne established in 1985 was the first Centre in Australia devoted to Asian laws. This Centre promotes the teaching of Asian laws at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Centre for Asian and Pacific Law was established in 1993 within the University of Sydney. This Centre mainly focusses to Chinese law. The Centre for Southeast Asian Law was established in 1996 within the Law Faculty of the Northern Terri-tory University. The Directer of this Centre is Prof. Jesse Min Aun Wu born in Malaysia. So this Centre has a special plan and commitment to research the matters concerning Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Singapore. Asian laws are taught mainly at postgraduate course. But the University of Melbourne tried to integrate Asian legal system as comparative law studies in the first-year subject, History and Philosophy of Law, at the undergraduate course from 1994. Teaching of Asian laws moves from comparative and civil law courses to encompass specialised courses on particular countries and specialised courses covering areas such as Asian business and tax law. The teachers are gradually bilingual specialists. Most law faculties try to introduce courses on Asian laws in their curricula. For example lndonesian law is taught in 17 universities , Asian region law in 11 universities , Chinese law in 7 universities which can be found from the guide to the study of law in Australia edited by Committee of Australian Law Deans.
