This study is intended to examine the processes and reasons of authoritarianization and democratization of newly independent countries, which became independent after World War II. As for the authoritarianization of these countries, this study shows us that the processes and characteristics of decolonization affected it deeply. Decolonization was a kind of revolution, so it broke the power balances between states and societies in these countries. In the processes, local elites lost their social and economic resources to rule their villages. Without the support of powerful local elites, it is very difficult for the opposition parties to find their own bases, which are strong enough to resist against powerful “administrative parties", which monopolize the administrative organizations. Decolonization also broke the ideological power balances between the ruling parties and the oppositions. In the processes of decolonization, people had to find their new identities as members of new nations. However, this is not easy task for ordinary people. They need someone to 'give' them their new identities. It is “founding fathers of nations", who play this role as charismatic leaders. Ruling parties, as parties of the charismatic leaders, also monopolize the ideologies of new nations. For democratization of their countries, oppositions had to have some bases to resist and win against ruling “administrative parties”. Between two monopolies of the ruling parties, it is the monopoly of ideology that ruling parties lose in the long run, especially after the political or physical deathes of charismatic leaders. By contrast, on the administrative organizations, ruling parties do not give up the monopoly, and rather the monopoly was often strengthen in the course of time. So it is ideology on that oppositions can rely, to resist and win against the ruling administrative parties. However, in the international situation of these countries, the ideological options along the traditional left-right axis are severely limited for the oppositions. It means that they need some new ideological axis for democratization. It is the reason why democratization of these countries often brings with the rise of the ideological parties of new type, for example, with fundamentalism, regionalism, and a kind of new nationalism.
