What is the relationship between gender and national and transnational violence ? In order to address this question, this paper starts by looking at the case of a young transgendered person (Male- to-Female),who we call ‘G.' In October 2002, G was murdered in a bar, and her body then dumped in the mountains. Four men were arrested in connection with the murder; one confessed to being there and watching, but not being directly involved. The victim was biologically male, but went to the bar as a female. The man who watched the murder had previously been involved sexually with the victim; he claims that the reason he did not help was that he was afraid of being labeled as a homosexual. The case of G is not directly related to international relations. However, it is interesting because it allows us to begin to question what it is about gender and sexuality that can induce such violence. It is suggested that in searching for the answer, we must consider the ways in which states and nations construct gender and sexuality, and how gender and sexuality are used to construct nations and states. The present paper suggests three reasons for why G was murdered. The first , general discrimination toward sexual minorities, is relevant to this discussion in terms of the ways it relates to the latter two reasons. The second cause can be found in the ‘culture of violence' which has grown to encompass much of the world. The third reason is a result of the ways that gender and sexuality are constructed, in this case in the United States. Using this murder as a point of departure, the paper looks at the inter-relationships among gender, sexuality and violence. The paper begins with a discussion of the meaning of sex and gender, in order make visible the violence inherent in interpretations of sex/ gender as dyads. Next, the concept of the ‘war system' is introduced to look at the ways individuals are enmeshed in a system of violence. In particular, it looks at the ways gender, sexuality and nationalism converge, and suggests that the culture of violence and militarization help to promote the use of violence and force. Finally, the paper examines efforts of civil society to change this kind of gender violence, focusing on activities in North America such as the Transgender Day of Remembrance in the US and the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada.
