Though small in size, Indian community in Hyogo Prefecture has one of the longest history among the non-Japanese communities, and has played important roles in the prefectural society. This paper focuses on the community's historical nature and experiences through the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, and analyses how the community has contributed to and has potential for enhancing multicultural symbiosis. As Indians' experiences since the earthquake is hardly known so far, the study is based on the author's questionnaire survey and interviews. The Indian community in Hyogo consists mainly of three sub-groups but these have a loose national bond as 'Indians' through the various events and international schools where most of their children attend. They suffered little physical damage from the earthquake, but psychological and economic effects were substantial and many had to evacuate Kobe for a month or two before coming back. Immediately after the earthquake, Indians helped one another and a few opened their own houses and bathrooms for not only compatriots but also for Japanese evacuees, and also distributed cooked meals for evacuees at home or at a public evacuation centre. Though the intra- and inter-communal relations before and after the earthquake did not change drastically, some Indians point out that the relations became closer. Some commented that they developed closer contacts or a common bond with Japanese neighbours. Alternation of generations in the Indian community in the 10 years since the earthquake made young leaders more active in creating opportunities to discuss multicultural relations with other community leaders and to let people know non-Japanese communities' dietary cultures as an introduction to mutual understanding. The Indians' quadri-lingual ability and Asian identity, combined with their connections with Euro-American communities, would also help multicultural symbiosis by bridging various local communities. In addition, the transnational Indian network would greatly enhance international sharing of the earthquake/rehabilitation experiences.
