Since the Roll Back Malaria program was launched in 1998, the malaria burden has been reduced in many countries however, not all has been reduced in all countries, for example the Solomon Islands. In the Solomon Islands there have been major improvements in sanitation and public health, which has resulted in the overall mortality rate dropping quite considerably. However, despite this drop, the figures for deaths from malaria remain high and unchanged. Currently malaria is the second largest cause of mortality in the Solomon Islands. Nurses in Solomon diagnose malaria from its symptoms and provide antimalarial treatment without consulting doctors due to the shortage of medical doctors. Therefore, this paper will examine the capacity of nurses for the management of malaria. Also, it aims to determine the steps or main points for developing a training program for malaria nursing care in the Solomon Islands as part of international cooperation. The data was collected through a needs survey which was conducted during a workshop for development curriculum and material for malaria nursing supported by JICA, and through knowledge tests, and application capacity through paper testing, group discussion and individual interview. The result of paper testing showed that the level of knowledge on malaria nursing care at a basic level was generally good. However, inadequate capacity on application of knowledge was noted. The group discussion assisted nurses recognize the problems which needed to be addressed. There was a clear consensus on the considerable need for the improvement of malaria care during pregnancy and malaria in children, as there are many malaria cases including severe malaria. Moreover, there are requests to focus on“the treatment and Nursing care of severe malaria”and“communication and counseling skills”in the curriculum to strengthen malaria nursing care. Individual interviews demonstrated that many nurses have confidence in their knowledge of malaria from their clinical experience with many patients. However, their knowledge was not always based on sound principles of evidence. Often the nurses would imitate their colleagues without having the theoretical understanding to match their clinical intervention. Therefore, the important points for technical cooperation for nursing care capacity development is to encourage the nurses themselves to; 1)review weak points, 2)clearly identify the problem to be solved, 3)understand the priority of what they need to learn, and how to accomplish this, 4)focus on building consensus among working members, 5)make the training course compact(make training manageable to implement, and cost effective)
