Here will be an increase in the number of foreign women experiencing pregnancy and childbirth and raising their children in Japan. We believe that, because of differences in culture and language, experiencing pregnancy in a foreign country can lead to higher levels of stress than would be experienced in the mother’s native country. The subject of this case study is experienced assisted delivery, birth canal laceration and haemorrhaging due to excessive weight gain, despite having received health guidance. The subject gained approximately 25kg during her pregnancy. The hospital provided one session with a nutritionist without an interpreter. Because the foetus had not dropped at 40 weeks of gestation, labour was induced. The doctor employed vaccum-extracted delivery during labour and the mother experienced birth canal laceration, losing approximately 1.8L of blood. The subject was capable of understanding Japanese when it was spoken slowly. We believe that the main reason the subject did not understand the necessity of weight control is that she had grown up in a different culture. It is desirable for medical staff to attempt to understand different cultures and employ interpreters who are culturally aware when offering care to foreigners.
