In this paper, I provide an overview of the position of natural burial in contemporary Korea and analyze its historical context and present-day meaning. To engage in such an analysis, I consider the themes found in and structure of Korean research on natural burial, presenting the main points of the discussion surrounding the topic. Furthermore, while referencing the debate in Japan on natural burial, I offer some thoughts regarding the particularly Korean meanings given to such practices. The primary difference between Korea and Japan in research on natural burial is that in Korea there is a tendency not to give precedence to considerations of “environmental preservation.” In contemporary Korea, in order to “make efficient use of the country’s land” and “incorporate spaces of death into the living’s life environment,” places for natural burial must be easy to access as well as comfortable spaces. In some cases, this means the “making of graveyards into public spaces.” In other words, spaces for natural burial are often thought of as places that involve large-scale construction for their development, as well as facilities such as access roads, parking lots, altars, and resting areas. The primary focus of the Korean discourse surrounding “natural burial” is the idea that the “development” of land for natural burials prevents the land’s devaluation caused by graveyards and leads to its efficient use as a space for the living. In other words, this discourse can be understood as presenting alternative plans, in terms of utility value of the land, for policy issues such as graveyard shortages and “encroachment on the country’s land”. It is characterized by an appraisal of graveyards as having no value and no discussion of “the utility of graveyards themselves” from cultural perspectives such as funeral rites and affection for the departed. Therefore, it is hard to detect any interest in this discourse regarding the emotional involvement of individuals in “places to bury the dead.” In this sense, natural burial in Korea is the object of social sciences such as public policy and economics rather than fields in the humanities such as religious studies.
