Previous research has found (1) that L2 English learners whose L1s do not have articles have difficulty in choosing a correct article when the polarity of specificity differs from that of definiteness in a given semantic context (Ionin, Ko, & Wexler, 2004); (2) that the learners tend to overuse the when a is called for (Ionin et al., 2004); and (3) that this tendency is more prevalent when specificity is accompanied with especially stated knowledge (ESK) about the referent of a NP (Trenkic, 2008). This study experimentally examined (1) the effects of specificity with or without ESK in selecting L2 English articles by L1 Japanese speakers at three L2 proficiency levels (N = 47) in six semantic contexts which consisted of combinations of [∓definiteness], [∓specificity], and [∓ESK], and (2) how those effects differed relative to the learners' L2 English proficiency. The results of a repeated measures of ANOVA with multivariate approach showed that if a given semantic context was of [+specificity] coupled with [+ESK], then L1 Japanese speakers were more prone to incorrectly choose the than when [+specificity] coupled with [–ESK]. This shows that Ionin et al.'s (2004) results, which confirmed their Article Choice Parameter (ACP) and Fluctuation Hypothesis (FH), could be due, as Trenkic (2009) pointed out, to the way they defined and operationalized specificity. As for L2 proficiency interaction with semantic contexts, there was no significant interaction among definiteness, specificity, and L2 proficiency. A close analysis of the L2 learners' the overgeneralization suggests that specificity in lieu of definiteness affected L2 learners' use of English articles differentially depending on their L2 proficiency, in that it affected article use of the mid-proficiency level L2 learners (TOEFL iBT M = 50.91) more than that of their less proficient peers. This poses the question whether sensitivity to specificity might come into play in L2 article acquisition by article-less L1 speakers only after their L2 proficiency has grown to a certain level. More detailed research is called for on the relationship between 'ACP and FH’ and the L2 proficiency level of learners with various L1 backgrounds.
