This paper attempts to ascertain some of the reasons that natural burial has not spread in South Korea thus far. Funeral rites and graves—so-called “funerary culture”—have changed considerably in the country in the past twenty years or so. The background to these changes was a problem of land usage that accompanied an increase in the space used by traditional interment-based graveyards, as well as the environmental issue of clearing mountains and forests for graveyard development. To solve these issues, legal restrictions regarding graveyard size and the time periods during which they may be built were put in place, and there was an attempt to shift from traditional interment to cremation. This change was planned as beginning with the sharing and uniformitization of graveyards, continuing with the introduction of charnel houses alongside the spread of cremation, and finally leading to natural burials. However, the spread of natural burial has not been completely smooth; in actuality, it is not progressing as originally envisioned. When thinking about contemporary South Korean funerary culture, its metropolitan nature is important. The charnel houses in which the dead and the living meet are not set apart from the living spaces of city residents; rather, they are located within them. The dead and the living encounter each other not in far away, dark, and unusual spaces, but rather within clean, comfortable, and nearby ones; that is, life-worlds that include the dead are self-contained within metropolitan spaces. This is the style of contemporary funerary culture that South Koreans have arrived today at after leaving behind funerary culture’s more traditional forms. With regard to graveyards, and taking into consideration this culturally metropolitan nature, it is only natural that not just mountains and forests, but also parks within city spaces become relatively favored as land for natural burials. In South Korea, it is no longer possible to adhere to traditional funerary styles while also maintaining metropolitan living. Additionally, many people are showing receptive attitudes towards changes in funerary culture that have been accompanying urbanization. In this way, the funerary style for the South Korean dead is changing while reflecting the lifestyles of the country’s living.
