This paper aims to clarify the function of economic factors making differences in upper secondary education in Vietnam. For the purpose of this study, I focus on the following research question. The question is what kind of influence does the percentage of education expenditures in household expenses have on differences in upper secondary education. The findings are as follows. Firstly, the first section confirms the dramatic change of socio-economic status in Vietnam. For this change, it is not easy to observe the influences of economic factors in educational differences among 8 regions. From this result, the second section analyzes the relationship with the percentage of education expenditures in household expenses and more detailed educational gaps. The analytical viewpoints are educational differences in urban-rural areas in 8 regions. Moreover, this research adds the ethnical viewpoint to the analysis. Secondly, from these analyses, it turns out the percentage of education expenditures in household expenses has influence on enrolment and dropout rates in urban areas. Furthermore, regarding the ethnical viewpoint, the economic factor has influence on survival rates of ethnic minorities too. The second section also provides the analysis viewpoint, the diversity of ethnic minorities, for a minute and critical analysis. Thirdly, in addition to this economic barrier, there is the disparity on school numbers. The students in urban areas of Southern Vietnam are especially hard to enroll high schools, or tend to quit school before graduation. Nevertheless, Southern Vietnam has also fewer schools than Northern Vietnam. Differences between Northern and Southern Vietnam in upper secondary education exist under the circumstances. Finally, this paper suggests following two points.(1)When socio-economic status gets complicated, research needs more detailed analytical perspectives.(2)It is not easy to regard ethnic minority as a monolithic group.
