In previous works, the author has pointed out that there was far more active discourse about comfort women taking place in Japan than in South Korea or international society before the end of the 1980s. This was because there was a different attitude in South Korea, where talking about the issue was regarded as being taboo or shameful, whereas it was easier in Japan to approach this issue. Consequently, many novels and articles relating to it appeared soon after end of World War II in Japan but not in South Korea. This early sign of discourse in Japan was also evident in South Korea until the 1970s, as a means of helping people to understand the issue. However, that does not mean that such early discourse was similar to that carried out today. It certainly did not include clear points of view that explained the issue as a result of colonial rule or discrimination against women, but seemed to regard it as just one of the many tragedies of a miserable war undertaken by imperial Japan. So when did the discourse about comfort women in Japan change and why did this occur? To answer these questions, we should turn to a famous book by Kako Senda, Jugun ianfu (Tokyo: Futabasha, 1973), which should be seen as being a significant turning point. Senda’s book was the first best seller in Japan on the issue of comfort women and it was translated into Korean within a year of its publication. In South Korea, it was the first book in Korean that seriously analyzed the comfort system in detail. However, the questions remain as to how he first became involved with this subject and why his book was so influential. This paper identifies the reasons as follows: Firstly, as a “child of colonial rule” who grew up in Dalian, China, Senda fully realized that Japanese discrimination against other Asian people was the key to analyzing the mechanism. It was therefore natural for him to describe the issue in the context of colonial rule. Secondly, Senda was born in 1924 and belonged to a generation which was between those who actually experienced the battlefields of war and those who did not. He was mobilized by the Imperial army in 1944 but assigned to duties on the mainland, before being demobilized in Kagoshima, Japan at the end of the war. This meant that he was a rare soldier who did not experience the real horrors of war for himself. He made effective use of his personal background. In his book, he made himself out to be someone who did not know anything about the “reality of war” and writes the story from the point of view of such a person who is trying to discover the true reality of life. When the book was published in 1973, most of the Japanese population consisted of the post-war generation, so adopting such an approach was a very effective way of bringing this issue to the attention of younger people. It made it clear that this was not just an event that had occurred in the past, but was something that directly related to themselves.
