The purpose of this paper is to clarify the impact and challenges of COVID-19 on postgraduate students preparing for their master's thesis. In terms of university strategies related to COVID-19, the problem of students not being able to conduct overseas research visits has hardly been discussed since shifting to online courses was given the highest priority for many universities. The target of this survey is 14 students in the second (M2) or third year (M3) master program at GSICS who are conducting research on educational issues with international perspectives. Specifically, M2 students are in a special circumstance where they cannot carry out overseas research visits due to COVID-19 since spring of 2020 when they entered GSICS. The survey was conducted online from April to May 2021 by the focus group interview method of three students (including one group of two students). The purpose of the survey and the questions were informed in advance, and students exchanged their ideas at the online meeting. The questions are: (1) the content and method of their master’s thesis designed initially, (2) challenges that they encountered as a result of the pandemic, (3) alternative measures taken to overcome these challenges, and (4) the desired outcomes for GSICS and their research supervisors. The results are as follows. First, many students are forced to change their research themes, such as targeted countries/regions, topics, and methods. Second, online lessons do not necessarily guarantee the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Third, there are cases of conversion from qualitative research to quantitative research using existing secondary data. Fourth, as many commuting students found it difficult to attend campus, they were prone to isolation and loneliness that might have been the cause for depression and stagnation of their research activities. Faculty members should be made aware of these issues as an effort to provide ongoing support for students.
