One of the major challenges in climatology is to deepen our knowledge on the natural variability of the climate. Therefore, all pieces of the climate history puzzle are to be brought together in order to reconstruct the climate over the last millennium. This paper focusses on the early climate descriptions by western visitors in Japan and, more particularly, on the instrumental meteorological observations carried out by physicians working for the Dutch East Indies Company. Emphasis is laid upon the eappraisal of two 18th century data sets of instrumental meteorological observations mostly made at the artificial island Dejima in the harbour of Nagasaki. These instrumental meteorological data complement the Japanese historical climate data.
