Trunk forward bending, a combined action of -lumbar spine 'and pelvis (hip joints), is an important motion in terms of its frequency. In daily living and has been studied concerning the mechanism of low back pain. We studied lumbar and pelvic motion during unloaded maximum forward bending to elaborate on the kinematic pattern of these trunk segments in 20 healthy young adults with an electromagnetic tracking device. An analysis of time-based lumbar and pelvic angular changes revealed that there was no consistent pattern of time lags between these segments when trunk flexion (from a starting upright to a maximum bending position) started and ended. In 18 of the 20 subjects, however, pelvic rotation preceded lumbar one by a mean of 0.30 second when extension (from a maximum bending to a starting upright position) initiated. The precedence of pelvic motion at the initiation of extension was accompanied by its increased angular displace-ment, that was 4.5 times as much as lumbar one at the first 20% of normalized extension. These results suggest that forward bending is performed with the neuromuscular mechanism using different strategies for flexion and extension.
