The aims of this study were to analyse the changes of autonomic nervous activities in 12 healthy nurse students who participated in taking the fixed supine posture for 8 hours and to obtain the basic understandings of nursing care in patients who were undertaken invasive medical procedures such as cardiac catheterization and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Students were forced to keep the same supine position from 8:30 to 16:30, and a 1kg of sand bag was loaded on a inguinal region from 9:30 to 16:30. Meals were administerd by other nurse students at 12:00, but they could drink water freely. Vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and respiration rate were measured every 30 minutes. Ambulatory electrocardiograms were recorded and power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability was performed. We also measured the urinary catecholamine contents to asses the sympathetic nervous activities. There was no change in blood pressure. Heart rate and respiration rate showed triphasic patterns, namely those decreased gradually from 9:00 to 11:00, then increased gradually to show maximal rates at 14:00, and decreased gradually again. The ratio of low frequency component (LF : sympathetic nervous activity) of high frequency component (HF : parasympathetic nervous activity) of heart rate variability showed similar changes to heart rate and respiration rate. The LF/HF ratios in two nurse students who were hypotensive during and after this study were significantly lower than those in other students (p<0.05). This indicated that the relative increment of parasympathetic nervous activity was closly related to hemodynamic changes. The contents of urinary catecholamines, especially dopamine increased in all syudents. The LF/HF ratios were inversely correlated to the content of urinary catecholamines (R= -0.71, p<0.05). This study showed that forced supine postures were stressful physically. This posture could induce changes of autonomic nervous activity, hemodynamics and respiratory function. It could be emphasized that close observations are important to take care of the patients who are forced to take the fixed posture.
