抄録
The aim of this paper is to investigate how English post-modification (PM) structures are treated in the junior high school textbooks used in Japan and Taiwan. The reason for focusing on PM is that this particular learning item is commonly seen as one of the most difficult targets for Japanese and Taiwanese students alike. So this study tries to see how recent research findings about perceived difficulty orders among various PM forms are reflected in the organizations of the textbooks chosen. When it comes to word order, Japanese and Chinese are similar in that both use pre-modification structures as against PM w. Ohen expressing ideas which English expresses by using PM constructions. Therefore, another aim of this cross-national study is to examine how this common linguistic feature of the two languages affects the way English PM is taught at junior high school in Japan and Taiwan. Six English textbook series of Japan and five of Taiwan were studied in terms of (1) the grading of PM structures, (2) the frequency of occurrence of each of the PM structures and (3) teaching strategies (Hierarchical Teaching Method=HTM versus sentence-combining) suggested in each of the textbooks. The main findings include: (1)Most Taiwanese textbooks put subject relatives before object ones, whereas the textbooks of Japan varied as to the order of presentation; (2)The Taiwanese textbooks contained a greater amount of PM than their Japanese counterparts; and (3)The Japanese textbooks tended to suggest the use of HTM while most Taiwanese ones used sentence-combining. It is necessary in the future to investigate the difficulty order of English PM structures perceived by Taiwanese students as well as by junior high school students in Japan.
