This paper examined childbirth during the Edo period in Japan, especially the great influence of the afterbirth (placenta) on delivery and child rearing which had been lost in the present day. The concept of the afterbirth was different in the Edo period from that of the modern period. It had three distinct meanings. Primarily, the afterbirth was regarded as "the twin” which born together with the child. This shows that the people of the Edo period regarded the afterbirth as retaining a "soul". Second, the afterbirth was self-caring itself as expressed with and "Tiduna"(Ban Gensyun), the cord of milk for a fetus. That is to say, the fetus cannot live without the afterbirth. It meant the death of the child (a miscarriage) when a fetus separated "Tiduna," because Tiduna is the protector of the fetus. Finally, the afterbirth was regarded as the umbrella which protected a fetus from "Taidoku," that is poison from the mother. The fetus (a child) is brought up through the afterbirth. Rather, the afterbirth is concerned with the child more directly than the mother.
