The aim of this paper is to explore the process of women's empowerment when they form self-help groups to improve the status of women, and also investigate what kind of self-help group(SHG) activities effectively improve their status. The population of Nepal comprises diverse ethnic minorities and complicated caste groups. In most Nepali communities, gender inequality has been universally observed, where for instance women have had less political power, a restricted right to possess wealth, and fewer opportunities to access education and health services. In Nepal, therefore, it is a big challenge for women to escape from such a discriminatory status. To prevent gender discrimination, on the other hand, it has been increasingly recognized that improving the status of women is indispensable, which has a high potential to contribute to social and economic development. A number of studies suggest that forming women's SHGs and receiving adult education have the potential to enhance gender transformation, particularly transformation of awareness of gender-related issues. This study, to examine the effectiveness of women's SHG activities in Nepal, utilizes face to face interviews using semi-structured questionnaires to the leader and members of women's SHGs, and also involves participant observation. 20 wards in Patan-city, Kathmandu, were selected for this study. The main findings of this study are that activities of women's SHGs comprise 1) securing access to financial services such as saving and lending, 2) participating in social activities such as regular group meetings among women, and 3) providing occupational trainings to group members. Through these activities, women could acquire new skills and knowledge, and could improve self-reliance and strengthen their capability in decision making. In addition, by sharing these skills and knowledge, women could reinforce mutual reliance with their family members.
