In the 1990s, Japan has seen a sudden, geometric increase in the number of 4-year colleges for nurses. This phenomena has coincided with severe criticism of Japanese college education for its lack of accountability by the scholars both in Japan and abroad. This paper analyzes the significance and the problems of nursing education in Japan, and offers strategies to solve these problems. The discussion focuses on the enormous gap between nursing as an academic discipline (largely borrowed from the U.S.) and the nursing practiced in Japan, governed by the archaic medical law that follows outmoded 19th century medical models. It is argued that college education for nurses must be accountable and serve the true need of society, that is, to solve the current medical crises. Japan can no longer ignore great contributions of modern nursing, achieved in countries where nurses were given opportunities to be autonomous professionals and thus allowed them to give the best possible care for the patients
