Although Japanese graduate and professional education expanded in only such fields of studies as science and engineering before the end of 1980's, it has expanded remarkably in most fields of studies including humanities and social sciences especially since the early 1990's. Based upon the facts, there have been many studies conducted on the entrance of graduate and professional education, and they make it clear that its entrants were diversifying. However, there were only few studies focused on the exit after 1980's when this level of education began to expand. Therefore, our purpose in this study has been to analyze the career path of graduate and professional school students in this expanding period. Main findings are as follow; (1) Although, with massification of the graduate and professional education, it is estimated that the students who are not seriously academically oriented are increasingly entering this level of education, our data show the ratio of the students who finished their schooling in the least terms is not decreasing. However, it is certain that the actual number of the students who did not do so is increasing. (2) The ratio of the graduate and professional school students who did not find positions or get further education has increased since 1990. However, recently the rising speed of its ratio is slower than the counterpart ratio of college students. Therefore, the evaluation of graduate and professional school students is expected to heighten in the labor market. (3) The ratio of the graduate and professional school students getting nonprofessional jobs is increasing. This is especially true in the social sciences, where its ratio is even rising to the same level as the counterpart ratio of college students now. (4) However, it is certain that the actual number of the graduate and professional school students who got such professional jobs as researcher, engineering and teacher are increasing, while the counterpart number of college students are decreasing. Therefore, the graduate and professional level education is possibly being established as requirement for entering the professions.
