(1) Institute for Promotion of Higher Education, Kobe University (2) Department of Pedology, Faculty of Human Development and Education, Kyoto Women’s University In 2006, Department of Pedology, Faculty of Human Development and Education,Kyoto Women’s University conducted a unique practice which aimed at developing child-care skills necessary to child-care professionals through providing students of practical training o f puppet play by a famous professional puppet player and director Susumu Tange, former leader of Musubi-za one of the oldest puppet theaters in Japan. The practice consisted of the course work “Practical training of child-care skills” and an extra curriculum teaching ventriloquism as well as performance in various fields, e.g., child-care centers, hospitals, a children’s house and a public place. In this study, students who participated in the practice were followed u p and interviewed in divide ally and in a group. The results indicated that the students have learned a lot about how to interact with children well through the practice of puppet play and that they were motivated deeply to become good child-care professionals, understanding the meaning of child-care in various places. After finishing the practice, most of the students performed puppet play and/or ventriloquism singly in each child-care center during their on -the-job training of child-care. It is suggested that learning how to play puppet play are not only effective i n facilitating growth an d maturation of students as child-care professionals, but also as n on-professional care- givers who support children’s socio-emotional development. In the discussion, the influence, the importance and the relevance of learning from a professional puppet p layer and those of experiential learning in field practice are discussed in comparison with course works of puppet play practice by non-professional teachers only in classrooms. It can be concluded that Tange’s personal influence and the field experience made the practice what can be called “a good practice” for child-care students.
