The graft polymerization method is one of the most effective methods to produce a new polymer with a unique function. To produce the polymer, we have conducted experiments on radiation graft polymerization with several-hundred keV ion beams. In our experiment, a high-density polyethylene (PE) film was irradiated with W beams, then, graft polymerization with a monomer solution, such as acrylic acid or acrylonitrile, was conducted. Radicals generated by interaction between the beam ion and PE molecules become the start point of graft polymerization. Because a range in PE depends on ion energy, density distribution of the graft chain can be controlled by ion energy. Using a mask that restricts the ion beam incidence, PE sheets containing graft chains only in the unmasked area were obtained. Multiple ion beam graft polymerization can produce a polymer possessing some functional bases at specified positions. We have succeeded in the production of a polymer film with a three-dimensional structure. In addition, we have demonstrated the production of adsorbents to collect the element dissolved in sea water.
