抄録
This essay aims at examining how western performers recognize Japanese sounds in western contemporary compositions and seek their own artistic expressions with them. In concrete, a modern ballet piece “Kaguyahime” written by Ishii Maki and choreographed by Jiří Kylián is analyzed here. The music includes Japanese wadaiko drums and gagaku instruments, shô (mouth organ), hichiriki (reed pipe), ryûteki (flute), as well as a variety of western percussions. Three interviews with a ballerina, an assistant choreographer, and a conductor, done by the author herself in February 2013, have revealed that performers recognize several stages of integrity of performance, which is closely related to the understanding of Japanese sounds. First, when they encounter with unfamiliar music, they are perplexed and realize that their criteria of understanding western music are no longer useful. Secondly, they find the unfamiliar music is ‘different’ (from their own music) but it holds some ‘consistency’. Thirdly, if the consistency becomes familiar enough for them to ‘sing’ the music (by heart), they could reach higher level of performance. Also, they sometimes utilize visual metaphors to describe the music and evoke concrete images to enrich their expressions in the performance.
