Analyses between 30 master theses of NTNU (learner corpus, totaling 945,269 tokens) and 30 articles by native speakers also in TESOL (control corpus, totaling 992,038 tokens) are made in three aspects: overuse, underuse, and misuse. Although results show that NTNU students do have some issues of underuse. overuse, and misuse, yet the frequency is lower compared. to previous studies. In this study. four categories of linking adverbials are thoroughly investigated, with detailed. charts and diagrams for analyses. A total of 9,386 and 12,4211inking adverbials were identified respectively in the control corpus and learner corpus. In this paper, classroom instructions are identified as the most influential factor for EFL learners' inappropriate usage of linking adverbials. For example, EFL learners tend to overuse "nevertheless" simply because they are taught that it looks more formal in academic writing; however, this word is not often used by native speakers- the authentic group. After all, these students majoring in TESOL in NTNU are going to be formal language teachers guiding other EFL learners. Their language ability should as flawless as possible. Several pedagogical implications are suggested for further studies.
