George Grosz (1893-1959), an artist who drew many stinging satires about German society after World War II, was introduced to Japan in the early 1920s. His works were welcomed by many Japanese avant-garde artists and exerted considerable influence on their movement. In this paper, I elucidate the reosons for acceptance of Grosz's art in Japan and the considerable popularity of his works as cartoon (manga) by focusing on the development of the manga and the close relationship between manga and the proletarian art movement in Japan during that period. My conclusion is that it was the internationalization of the satirical Western cartoon and the development of the manga in Japan that promoted its high evaluation as art and the acceptance of Grosz's works as manga. I noted that Grosz's works depict class conflicts, which could be a crucial motivation for giving manga an important position in the proletarian art movement; however, the negative and destructive tone of his works drew criticism as well. Grosz received both sympathy and criticism, reflecting Japanese avant-garde artists' complicated situation when espousing the socialistic art theory.
