This paper analyses the first “Who’s Who” book of Chinese in Java, then a central part of Dutch colony, Netherlands East India, published in 1935. Covering as many as 872 notable persons throughout 86 cities and towns, this book can be used as a useful source to get insights into various aspects of Indonesian society of that age from the viewpoint of leadership in Chinese community. At the outset, this paper focuses on 30 persons who appears as notable figures in Semarang, the principal city of Central Java, with a prospect to write a social history of the city’s modern age. Part 1 firstly review the general situation of the Netherlands East India and Chinese community since the dawn of 20th century until the mid-1930s. Then this author make a brief introduction of the main editor of “Who’s Who” book, Tan Hong Boen (1905 ~1983), a Java-born Chinese journalist and novelist, who was called “ a writer with a thousand faces”. The author also makes some criticism on the book. One of them are about advantage (relative accuracy and vividness) and disadvantage (possible restraint) as a “Who’s Who” book treating influential persons still living in the same age with the editor and the publisher. Among 30 leading persons of Semarang, this part depicts 15 persons. They are the entrepreneurs, merchants, staff of big farms, advocates, journalists, relatives of traditional community leaders (Chinese officers such as Majoor, Kapitein), and at the same time leaders of social or political organizations. Part 1 devotes to description of their birth places, educational backgrounds, life careers and achievements, etc., which made them as Chinese community leaders of their age, according to Tan Hong Boen’s book. Deeper analysis will be made in Part 2, after reviewing another 15 persons’ profiles.(Continues to Part 2, to be published in the next volume)
