抄録
This paper aims to examine the concept of luswa among the Jopadhola peopleliving in eastern Uganda based on ethnographic data, and narratives of nativepeople recorded and transcribed verbatim as a form of a certain volume of the‘text’; these data were collected in fieldwork among them between 1997 and 2017. Luswa is said to be caused by violating the incest taboo and having sex withrelatives; it arises from ‘inappropriate’ behaviours, for example witnessing closerelatives’ nakedness and genitalia, including doing so by accident. Sleeping in thebeds of parents or uncles or aunts, and having sex, is also regarded as luswa. Thesymptoms of those who are thought to be luswa are generally said to be ‘the sameas the victim of the curse’. It is said to be ‘the same as the HIV patient ’, andincludes being physically weak, and being impotent without reproductive ability. The hair falls out and discolours. The skin cracks, peels off, turns yellow, spots onthe skin appear, and eventually the person goes mad. Luswa, which can be caused intentionally, is often used by parents as it candeliberately be undertaken relatively easily as a substitute for the ‘curse’ that isbelieved to be ineffective with actual children. What is sure to resolve the effects of luswa is to carry out a ‘burn’ ceremony. Itis an official ceremony involving most of the members of the clan. Some peopleadvocate the existence of drugs, but they are unsure whether these work. This paper asserts that the concepts that play the role of causes of misfortunein the aetiology of the Jopadhola are intertwined and closely related to each other. As it is apparently clear, from examining the ‘text’, that the symptoms of luswa are not specific to luswa, it is not surprising that explanations for the symptoms ofluswa can be applied to the conditions described by diverse concepts held by thepeople, such as ‘curse’, ‘jajwok’, ‘tipo,’ and so on.
