The aim of this paper is to clarify Peter L. Berger’s earliest concerns. Therefore, in this paper I begin by introducing the contents of his doctoral dissertation in detail which he submitted to New School for Social Research in 1954. Despite its author’s reputation, this dissertation is hardly known, except for by a handful of students of Baha’ism. Nevertheless, in terms of understanding Berger’s earliest concerns, it is quite an important work. His doctoral dissertation deals with the history of Baha’ism. Baha’ism is a monotheistic religion, established by Baha-u’llah in 19th century Iran. It also has its origins in Babism which grew out of Shi’ite Islam in 19th century. Berger describes the history of Baha’ism as a movement “from sect to church,” understanding it in terms of Weber’s famous thesis of the “routinization of charisma.” And in doing so, he tries to modify the thesis in a nuanced way. Then, I examine Berger’s intention of the dissertation in relation to his other research activities in the 1950s. Thus, it is revealed how consistently Berger continued to pay attention to religion in modern society. Finally, in the concluding sections, I indicate the relationship between his concerns in the 1950s and his famous sociological theory in the 1960s.
