The concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs), Rb, Sr, Ba and some major elements in six mollusk shells and five seawater samples from the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, were analyzed to examine trace element partitioning between mollusk shell and seawater. On the partition coefficient vs. ionic radius (PC-IR) diagram, the divalent cations formed parabolic patterns that peaked near the Ca ionic radius, and the data points for trivalent cations (REEs) fell along similar parabolic patterns. These results indicate that the cations having the most suitable size for the Ca site in the crystal structure can be accommodated most easily in the crystals. Moreover, obvious differences between calcite and aragonite shells were observed with respect to the concentration ratios of Mg/Ca and Ba/Sr. Furthermore, the REE partition coefficient patterns on the PC-IR diagram showed peaks on the light REEs, and the peak positions for the calcite shells tended to be smaller than those for the aragonite ones. These findings indicate that the crystal structure is one of the major factors that control the partitioning of divalent and trivalent cations. As for monovalent cations, their PCs (partition coefficients) on the PC-IR diagram showed relatively flat patterns, and the calcite/aragonite differences were not obvious. Some interesting correlations between the concentration ratios of Mg/Ca and Ba/Ca, those of K/Na and Rb/K, and the size of Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) were discussed.
