Major and minor elements of arsenic rich groundwaters were examine to determine the sources of these elements. Ca and alkalinity are the highest cation and anion for most of the samples. The high Ca concentrations indicate the high and variable Pco2 induced by organic matter decay. The Ca/alkalinity ratio of 0.24 is almost half of the calcite Ca/alkalinity ratio. Such ratio should be explained by combined dissolution of other minerals (i.e., mica, amphibole). Some samples show relatively high Na and Cl concentrations might indicate the seawater mixing for the groundwater. Relatively high Fe concentrations in high organic matter decay aquifers indicate the reduction of Fe-oxyhydroxides, though goethite on chlorite suggests Fe-oxidizing conditions of the aquifers. Probably, the Fe concentrations in groundwater are controlled by both reducing and oxidizing conditions in the aquifers. The Fe concentrations in groundwater show weak correlation with alkalinity. The weak correlation may be attributed to the precipitation of Fe (i.e., Fe-sulfides). Some samples show relatively high SO4 concentrations having relatively high Na and Cl concentrations suggest the seawater origin of SO4. Arsenic in groundwater is weakly correlated with Fe. The precipitation might be one reason for the weak correlation between As and Fe. The weak correlation should be explained by some other reasons; the presence of high organic matters decrease the As adsorption capacity of Fe-oxyhydroxides, sometimes As release from Fe-oxyhydroxides without complete dissolution of Fe-oxyhydroxides, sometimes As bearing detrital mica weathering release As into groundwater. The Fe-oxyhydroxides reduction is probably a source of As in groundwater, though other As bearing detrital minerals should be considered for the sources of As in groundwater, because the warm humid condition, seasonal fluctuations of groundwater table promote weathering of minerals in shallow aquifer. The mineral weathering might be the principle mechanisms for high cations in groundwater.
