Rainfall induced shallow landslides cause a significant damage throughout the world, annually. Triggering of such shallow landslides depends on various factors including intensity and duration of rainfall as well as type of soil and angle of inclination of the slope. In order to study the triggering factors for shallow landslides during rainfall, sandy soil slopes were prepared in laboratory at various angles of inclination ranging from 0 to 50 degrees and at two different relative densities. Those slopes were poured with rainfall intensities of 30 and 240 mm/hours through a specially developed rain simulator. Depths of water front and values of suction within the slope were measured at various time periods. The depths of water front and values of suctions were also calculated through the specially developed finite element program that incorporates the hydro-mechanical constitutive model for partially saturated soil. The numerically calculated depth of water front and values of suction at different location in the slopes having various angles of inclinations matched well with the experimentally observed values. The combined results obtained with the numerical and experimental studies were utilized to predict the variation in the depth of water and values of suction at different intensities of rainfall.
