For L2 learners, the importance of acquiring collocations has been recognized, so it seems necessary to identify what makes some collocations difficult for them. Researchers have found that incongruent collocations are much more difficult for L2 learners to acquire. However, few studies have analyzed L2 learners’ natural language production in terms of the congruency of collocations. Although one of them was by Nesselhauf (2003), he did not consider the influence of the genre of the language data, and did not compare the results with the model language. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the congruency of the verb-noun (V-N) collocations lacking in the language of Japanese (JPN) learners of English. To make this study sophisticated, it gathered the V-N collocations produced by JPN learners and English native speakers under the same situations by using the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English, and made a list of V-N collocations lacking in despite some researchers have found acquiring congruent collocations need less effort than incongruent collocations, there were still remarkable number of congruent V-N collocations on the list. Most of them used abstract nouns, and thus it can be expected that the abstraction degree of nouns influences on the difficulties of producing V-N collocations. This finding suggests that verb + abstract noun collocations need to be emphasized even if they are congruent when teaching collocations to L2 learners.
