This paper examines how "femininity" is involved in the act of memorializing the war dead at the Yasukuni Shrine, and attempts to clarify an aspect of nationalism today in Japan. The term "femininity" refers to the socially- and culturally- shaped attributes that are characteristic of women, and in the context of consolation, which is the theme of this paper, it is interpreted as the quality of expressing the feelings of grief and pain that accompany death. The Yasukuni Shrine, which was originally established as a national memorial institution for the war dead, has been inextricably linked to Japanese nationalism. Under the concept of nationalism of pre-war Japan that was based on the patriarchal system, "femininity," i.e., the quality of showing grief and crying was strictly banned at memorial services held by bereaved families. The attribute of "femininity" was seen as dangerous because it not only stimulated war-averse emotions, but also threatened to undermine a national order based on masculine principles. So, how has the relationship between the commemoration of fallen soldiers and "femininity" changed in Japan today? In general, the natural feeling of grief for fallen soldiers is no longer repressed as it once was in Japanese memorials today. However, in present-day Japan, we suspect that the idea of "femininity," which supposedly threatens nationalism, is once again being connected to the nationalist ideology and used to reinforce the myth of nationalism. This paper attempts to clarify this tendency by analyzing the practice of bridal-doll dedication to the Yasukuni Shrine and the representation of “femininity” in a recent war film in Japan.
