The purpose of this study is to discover unique feature of butterfly wings which can be applied our life as biornimicry. Butterfly scales, which stick to their wings, are essential for the maintenance of their life. One of their roles is the "water repellency". When I measured nine species of butterflies' water contact angles, they exceeded 150 degrees. It indicates that butterfly wings are "super-hydrophobic". If there is fine unevenness, a droplet cannot enter it, and it connects water repellency. When I looked over wings using a scanning electron microscope, I found ridges and ribs, which make a lot of fine unevenness on scales. It originated water repellency. In addition, a droplet easily rolled off the surface of the wings along the radial outward (RO) direction, but did not easily rolls off against the RO direction. This difference was noticeable on the back of wings than on the front. It depended on the angle between the principal part of a wing and scales. I think these complex features of their wings can serve our life by being used to create the original surface which have directional porous water proofing, such as umbrellas or rain coats.
