Protective packages must be evaluated in drop tests that sometimes break the product inside. Because there are often few spare parts during product development, this can be a big problem. Thus, a hybrid drop test, which uses a shock machine without causing product damage, has been proposed to replace traditional drop tests. In the hybrid drop test, the packaged product is assumed to be a single-degree-of-freedom system with friction and viscous dumping; peak acceleration at the target drop height is predicted on the basis of one drop test (conducted at a lower drop height) and a mathematical simulation. Physical model experiments have been conducted using this testing method, and the accuracy of the predictive acceleration was within 10%. However, the hybrid drop test requires an expensive testing system and simulation software, which makes it difficult for many packaging engineers to use. This paper proposes a simplified hybrid drop test that uses only a free-fall tester and an acceleration measurement system. This test's predictive peak acceleration is calculated using acceleration data gathered from multiple lower drop heights. Furthermore, this proposed method has been verified by actual free fall testing using a dummy package with both expanded polyethylene and pulp mold cushions. The accuracy of the predictive acceleration was within 15% for both cushioning materials. The difference in predictive accuracy between this method and the prior one may be caused by the package freight's angle at the moment of surface impact since the experimental acceleration is changed by this dropping angle.
