This study examines how Japanese royal court music gagaku is sent out to foreign countries, settled and developed there. A special focus is put on the gagaku performance course under the ethnomusicological programs at universities in USA and Europe. The author classified gagaku practices abroad into two types, 1) dispatch (from Japan) type and 2) resident type. In the former, Japanese professional or amateur musicians visit foreign cities and give concerts or workshops, while in the latter, local musicians or instructors give regular lessons or concerts. The university gagaku program, which falls in the latter, has functioned as a main pivotal point of gagaku practice in each place. One of the oldest gagaku classes of the university program is that of University of Hawaii, lead by Reverend Shamoto Masatoshi since 1962. Today gagaku has deeply taken root into the local soil and new compositions of Rev. Shamoto are sometimes staged as well as traditional ones. Gagaku program of University of California Los Angeles was launched officially also in 1962, by the effort of Robert Garfias and Togi Suenobu, a former court musician. Gagaku has been practiced also in several temples and churches in LA under Togi’s instruction. The Cologne Gagaku Ensemble (Germany) was established rather recently in 2000, with the aid of Rev. Shamoto of University of Hawaii, which is now instructed by Rev. Shimizu Yoshiro. The most recent setup of gagaku course is the one at Columbia University in New York (in 2006). The regular weekly lesson given by the local resident musicians and a special concert and workshop given by the professional musicians from Tokyo once a year are combined in the Columbia program. The special concerts often feature new gagaku compositions by the well-known or Columbia-graduate composers. The article reports details on the four cases above and concludes that the gagaku programs in the foreign universities play an important role for constructing gagaku literacy in a global context.
